This abridged version of Chapter 16 from the Wrox Press
book Beginning PHP4 covers how to create images on the fly.
By the end of the chapter you will have built a practical
application using these methods and concepts.
The Web, rapidly becoming fully audio-video capable, will
gobble up all the audio and video media (radio, TV, recordings),
just as the computer gobbled up the typewriter. Join Charlie
Morris in his new monthly column that discusses the Internet's
ongoing transformation into the universal medium.
Ranking among the best WYSIWYG editors in the world of Web design,
Freeway 3.0 is a great choice for those who are creative but don't want
to be HTMLers.
In Part 20 of
The Perl You Need to Know series,
Aaron Weiss looks at
several Perl DBM, or database management, solutions which have much
less overheard than DBI and are a quick way to store and use Perl
data structures to and from disk.
This manuscript is an abridged version of Chapter 16 from the
Wrox Press book Beginning PHP4. This book is a complete tutorial
in PHP's language features and functionality, beginning with the
basics and building up to the design and construction of complex
data-driven websites.
There is strong demand both for outsourced ad management and for
software solutions that can be run in-house by publishers. Most
of the top-end ad management outfits now offer both options.
Ken Sall brings you the highlights of the XML 2000 conference
held in Washington, DC from Dec. 3 to 8, 2000. Especially of
interest was the focus on Schema, Topic Maps, Web Services, SOAP,
UDDI, and XSLT.
When is a Mac not a Mac; when is a Mac a PC? Having all of the
benefits of PC programs on a Mac has been a real dilemma, when
suddenly Virtual PC entered the picture, providing a relatively
inexpensive solution to the problem.
Want to know what Microsoft has in store for ASP developers in the
future? This informative article will give you a first look at what's
coming down the road.
Even in the "old" days, Canvas was a good tool for
technical drawings, but its usefulness today is as
good for the internet and other forms of desktop
publishing as it is for the slide-rule crowd.
It is called The HTML Editor and because of its many good
features it might well become THE HTML Editor of choice for many
who construct Internet sites.
This abridged version of Chapter 3 discusses the
simple task of reading data from a database, writing it to the page,
using the data in variables, expressions and as the arguments for other
functions.
Every good, or not so good, work of science fiction is a trilogy
-- it's an immutable law of nature. Our series on web
personalization, back-ends, and Perl is no fiction, and only
arguable scientific, but a trilogy indeed. This months
installment of The Perl You Need to Know series concludes the
Personalization Methods Trilogy with a look at how Embperl eases
the burden of tying together the disparate parts of the
personalization system.
By this point in web history, surfers expect to see live-motion,
video-quality real-time rendering. In Flash. That loads in 10
seconds or less. On version 3 browsers. Believe it or not, we can
do it...
HTML Creator 2.5 is a great program for those who like to have
full control over their coding but, at the same time, do not mind
getting enough help along the way to make the process much
easier.
In this final installment of ASP Form Handling, Chris Assenza
discusses such topics as handling radio buttons and check boxes,
emailing attachments with CDONTS, and some ways of using the
data stored in the registration database we created last month.
Users of Visio will recognize ConceptDraw immediately. It has a
similar look, feel, usefulness, ease of operation, and quality.
The difference today is that Visio is now Microsoft Visio 2000,
and ConceptDraw sells for about $70 less.
Low-priced photo manipulation programs often are worth just what
they cost, but PhotoStudio 2000 is a product that throws the
price-to-quality ratio test into disarray.
SOAP is an XML-based protocol that lets you activate an application,
or even an individual object or method within an application, across
the Internet. SOAP could revolutionize the whole process of
developing Web applications.
Creating vector text can be as simple or as complicated as you want
to make it. For most of us, creating text on a path and fitting
existing text to a path is all we'll ever need. For the adventurous,
there is a brief introduction to converting text to curves included
at the end of this article.
It doesn't take long to realize that BBEdit 6.0 is obviously a
program that offers a wide variety of features designed to enable
users to spend time on productivity rather than seeing how this
particular wheel was invented.
Chapter 13 of Beginning XHTML, from Wrox Press covers different media
types and why they are necessary. Main subjects include the role of
Cascading Style Sheets in supporting media types, the differences
between media types and how to handle them and the future of style
sheets in XML.
Directory Services Markup Language, an XML schema designed to access
directories within XML programs, using familiar XML syntax and tools, without
having to use LDAP or proprietary directory-access APIs. If you need a
consistent way to work with multiple, dissimilar directories, you owe it to
yourself to check DSML out.
While many HTML editors aspire to be the weapon of choice for web builders,
Aspire-x HTML Editor is going about it somewhat differently. Many such
editors are free — as this one is — but unlike most, Aspire-x
has an extremely small file size despite having many, many options.
Nowadays, sophisticated web sites let users create accounts, to which
information and preferences can be tied. This month we'll begin a
personalization architecture that uses both a backend database and
cookies to manage user accounts in a flexible manner.
It doesn't seem so long ago that a top-of-the-line screen capture program
would grab the screen and only give users the option of saving it to a hard
drive. Today that is no longer the case. A product called CaptureEze Pro
stands far above most other screen capture programs because of its many
options, and one option in particular.
In Part 3 of "Using ASP for Form Handling", Chris Assenza takes
us to the next logical step... putting the data we've gathered
into a database. Learn how to develop a working registration
system, set up the database and make it accessible via the web!
Making RealAudio files is easy and can be completely free. First, you make
a good audio recording in your favorite format, which is usually a .WAV
file. Then, you encode it using the free RealProducer program for Windows
( or Mac, Linux, or Unix). And if you wish, get a free server for
high-efficiency streaming (or read this article to learn how
to skip the server altogether!).
There are many HTML programs that offer more frills than Top Dawg
HTML Editor, but its clean interface and no-nonsense approach to web
building is worth barking about.
Tired of having your documents overwritten? In a multi-user setting, it's
almost impossible to ensure that someone's changes will not be
overwritten every time you must manually edit a file. This is especially
important during development. This article will describe how to build a
source control system that will alleviate such problems.
Slicing images up into sections for placement in a table has
been the webdevelopers bane since it was first discovered that cool
designs could be created with tables, and images would load faster
if they were cut up into smaller pieces. Definitely not a fun time,
but Jasc has
come to the rescue with it's latest release of Paint Shop Pro!
PSP7 includes several new web features, one of which is a
slicer that handles the job very well.
So you've finally managed to install PHP. Anxious to use your
new tool, you find the print function in the manual, write your own
hello world, load the page and the dreaded
"Parse error: parse error in /usr/local/apache/htdocs/test.php
on line 2"
error pops up in front of you. You know the scenario, read on
to learn the fixes....
The name - Web-O-Rama - may sound like something seen on late night
but it is in fact an HTML program that is well thought out, and user
friendly. Get your copy now; it may not always be this inexpensive!
Internet radio is one of the new Web's killer applications, beating
out the traditional AM/FM kind in several departments. Although
there's already a huge amount of material out there, there are
still opportunities for creative people to develop new cutting-edge
music sites. If you're thinking of setting up your own Internet radio
station, here's a broad overview of how to do it, including the
technical and legal angles.
Are you faced with the task of creating a site which should be
programmed by a coder (namely you) and designed by a designer? Need
to make life easy for both of you? Sascha Schumann will show you how to

HTMLGate 2000 is a text editor for the intermediate to
expert user. Along
with HTML, it has editing capabilities and tags for Javascript,
VBScript,
DHTML, support for ASP and XML, its own drag-and-drop FTP program,
image tools, a GIF animator, sound recorder, style sheet editor, and
clipart... and it's free!
Search engines have long offered a simple staple of web-based
personalization, a drop down menu where you can choose whether
to view 10 or 20 or X results per page. Herein lies the bedrock
principle behind personalizing techniques: "I, the server, am
going to dig up a bunch of data to deliver to you; please tell me how
you would like it delivered."
In this article Aaron Weiss gives us a beginning look at
implementing personalization features on the web.
In the previous two parts of this series, we
components. In this, the
third and final installment of the series, we'll
look at why you'd want to
use SQL, and an example of it in action, via the
Microsoft Visual InterDev
6.0 programming environment.
Not all foxes hang out in the henhouse - some can reside on your
computer. One in particular, Fox 2.0a HTML text editor, can slyly
become one of your most useful web building tools.
Everyone knows Ebay is raking in the big bucks. Peer to peer
networking is where it's at, and auctions can make some
serious money. While finding items to sell and attracting people
to your auction is up to you, this article will show you how to build
an auction that actually works.
Over 15% of the population have a learning disability (LD). In
addition, a sizable percentage of the population is physically
challenged or has related problems. Making your page accessible
means bearing in mind that not all of
the visitors to your web site will be viewing it on a monitor and
navigating with a mouse. A clear, well-formatted site,
with easy words, can make it easier on everyone. Read on to

Last month you were introduced to the idea of using Microsoft's
Active Server Pages to handle data submitted from a form on a web
page. Building on that foundation, this article
will show you how to gather user input from a web-based form and then
test the validity of that input.
The complete list of all HTML Tags with
examples, both HTML and display. Most
HTML Tags here are supported by both
Netscape ane Explorer, but there are a
few that are browser-specific. Some
Tags here aren't HTML 1.0, 2.0, 3.0
(proposed), or 3.2 standards (including
major proposed standards from all
versions), but do offer major
enhancements.
Now that you've learned exactly what SQL is (in my
previous column), and how to use the standard
SELECT functions, it's time to move ahead to other features. In this
section, I'll be covering special grouping, logical and mathematical
functions.
Netscape originally introduced frames in
version 2.0 as an advanced way to
navigate through a site with multiple,
scrollable regions. Frames are a great
way to separate your content from your
navigation, or anything else you'd like to
be always visible.
You can have the greatest site on the Net,
complete with the greatest design, online
ordering, company information, links to
your services, not to mention the time and
money you've put into it. ...Yeah? So
what? If nobody can find you, think of all
that you've wasted. It's like having a
business and not being listed in the
phone book.
Adobe's Portable Document Format, or PDF, has become something of a
standard for storing and forwarding documents destined for the printed page.
Most web-based Perl scripts are built to deliver results in
HTML format, aimed at the web browser; in some cases, though, the option to
deliver result data in PDF format may be a real boon to visitors of your
site. This month we'll look at one rather simple way of bringing PDF
capability to your Perl scripts.
Eh! So you've come to learn about Tables? Tables are one of
the most powerful layout design tools in the HTML language.
With Tables, you can layout text and graphics virtually
anywhere, giving you more control over the design of your
site.
ActiveX controls are components that can
easily inserted into a Web page or other
application to reuse packaged
functionality someone else has
programmed.
Marshall McLuhan once said, "The medium is the message." Perhaps if he
had access to Riada International's internet products, his quote would
have been, "The medium is a great-looking message."
What is DHTML? That's a great question, one that can't simply be
answered with "It's a combination of HTML and JavaScript." A better
answer would be, "DHTML is the combination and use of several built-in
features of fourth generation browsers that enable a web page to be
more dynamic." Interested in knowing more? Read on then...
Style Sheets act as a "template" that can
control the layout and design of your
pages. They work separate from your
HTML, giving you easier maintainability.
So you want your very own www.you.com
or www.yourcompany.com domain name
eh? How about you@yourcompany.com
or sales@yourcompany.com as an
E-Mail address?
So what is SQL, and what can it do for you? At its simplest, SQL
is a basic language that allows you to "talk" to a
database and extract useful information. Learn the lingo in
"Simple SQL : Getting Started With SQL".
The file system object (FSO) is an essential block in an ASP developer's
foundation. With it you can do most anything, from making databases,
message boards, to content management. This article discusses the basic
operations of the FSO, gives some examples
on creating a guestbook, as well
as some more complex features.
Paint Shop Pro 7 is a stoke of genius on the part of
Jasc Software.
Who would have thought they could find any more features to add, or
have improved on the existing features... but they did! Just take a
quick look at what's new...
If Photoshop or CorelDraw are out of your price range, you might want
to consider a little graphics program called Draw-iT... and save
yourself $679 at the same time!
After years of forging through the
frontier - displacing the indigenous
gif89a and foraging for the elusive idea -
it looks like Flash is building permanent

it is apparent that specialized
disciplines - and, more importantly,
widespread recognition of them - are
forming.
It gets so frustrating to go to a web site you
think you may like only to
find out that the web designer who put together the site navigation was
the same guy running the Titanic moments before it hit the iceberg.
Such misery really isn't necessary. There are a lot of
navigation applets
strewn throughout the web; two that are worth
considering are from Usingit.com, and both are quite reasonable in
price.

a masterpiece.
The Extensible Markup Language allows you to create
custom languages (technically called vocabularies) for
particular applications, which can be anything from a Web
page to an e-commerce interface to a game to a complete
virtual world. Here's an overview of how (and why) to create
your own custom XML vocabularies, as well as examples of
some existing ones.
Welcome to PHP
Reprint from Intranet Design Magazine
July 21, 2000
Early era web developers with dynamic ambitions had little
more than server side includes in their toolbelts -- it was a dark
era indeed. The need for embedded server-parsed scripting
languages was apparent, and Microsoft went after this hunger
with their ASP, or Active Server Pages, technology. The
concept behind ASP, and all other embedded server-parsed
languages, is premised upon embedding programming code
within the HTML that makes up a web page. The web server
interprets and executes this code, replacing the code with its
results, and delivering the resulting web page to the browser.
Popular though ASP became, many developers continued
wanting for a more stable and less proprietary solution: enter
PHP, an open-source server-parsed embedded scripting
language.
It doesn't require perfect vision to find an image editor with
lots of extra
features, but one that does come into clear view is a program named
20/20 from byLight Technologies.
Back in the halcyon days of the Perl You Need to Know Part 4,
we looked at inserting the output from Perl-based CGI scripts
into pre-fabricated template pages. Ah, good times, good
times. Now, some 11 Perls You Need to Know later, we're more
sophisticated and urbane, thirsting for shaken martinis and
intrigued by the promises of embedded scripting languages,
made popular by Microsoft's Active Server Pages (ASP) and
the open-source PHP. Why embedded? Embedded scripting
lets you intermingle powerful programming within HTML
documents, streamlining the process of creating dynamic,
template-based pages. Perl fiends need not be left out in the
cold -- there are several options for embedding Perl into HTML,
and we'll look at several today, ultimately focusing on the
Apache::ASP module.
If you're using Paint Shop Pro 5 it's time to upgrade, if you're still
stuck in PSP4 it's definitely time to get your life back on track and
move forward with what may well be the best graphics program
available for the money.
There is nothing more frustrating than going to a web site anticipating
having your socks blown off only to find that waiting for it to load is akin
to watching grass grow. It seemingly takes forever and isn't all that
exciting. That's one reason why Plenio Software's Web Graphics
Optimizer 4.2 should be a part of any web builder's arsenal.
Automated content management is a must for many web sites.
It's difficult to provide fresh new content without a standard
automated system. This article discusses how to generate
a general submission system, as well as how to manage the
workflow, all with examples!
Normal site searches just don't fill the bill when most of your content resides in a database. You can't do anything useful like using a
'searchword' query; it just doesn't bring back relevant results. There has to be a better way, and indeed there is, with a few easy steps. This article details how to slap one together.
Flash developers are already doing lots of cool
stuff with Flash/JavaScript, but you have to do a little digging to get
started. Well, here is a good place to break ground...
Let's face it, web pages aren't designed for interaction with users.
At one time or another, you've probably found yourself needing to
know what user you are dealing with, and some information about
that user. But how do you do it on the web? There are many ways,
but most of them are either error prone, or serious security risks.
Passing around form data from page to page can easily be
sniffed, and even more easily forged. What is a webmaster to do?

The imminent demise of search
engines has been predicted for years, but they're still kicking.
Still, the current state of search engine technology leaves a lot
to be desired. This article explains why search engines so often
return reams of irrelevant documents, and hints at a possible solution.
With PHP, mySQL and a little savvy, you can build
a working database for Joe's Auto Sales, or even
for your own site! Follow along with William
Samplonius to learn how.
With tables and frames being such an integral part of layout on the
internet, having an HTML editor that handles both with a few extras
included is a pretty good idea. For that reason alone, HTML
Constellation 2.2.1 is a program after the heart of anyone who has
ever struggled to get either frames or intricate tables to look the way
they want.
We conclude the mod_perl trilogy with some tricks and
sleight-of-hand with which you can squeeze a few extra
processor cycles out of your web server -- also known as
optimizations. Specifically, we'll look at some ways to
take advantage of the mod_perl environment to better
optimize usage and, more importantly, re-usage of Perl scripts
and database requests.
If you are serious about Flash design you'll find uses for
Adobe Live Motion. It's amazingly insightful and mature for a beta -

The world's going wild over wireless. Whew! But what does this
mean to the designer of Web sites? Plenty. The wireless wave is
one of several trends that will change the nature of Web development -
and ironically make Web coding more like the way it was originally
conceived. Here's a look at some of the issues involved in creating
Web content for wireless clients, and wireless-enabling existing sites.
Ulead's Cool 3D has evolved from "one of the few alternatives" into a
decent titling program, and now into one that any web designer needs
to in their arsenal.
Last month we took a magical journey to the land of mod_perl. In that
article, we focused on the exciting relationship between the Apache web
server and the mod_perl module, and how this relationship optimizes
execution of Perl by reducing forking and caching pre-compiled code
within Apache child processes. This month, we shift our attention more
towards actual code, and some ways in which your Perl code may need
to be adapted to function properly within the environment created by
mod_perl.

basic banner creation tips.
From a half-dozen two years ago, the number of places to buy music
online has climbed into the thousands. Will the major record labels
disappear like the dinosaurs to which they've so often been
compared? Not likely. But it's now clear that independent music
distributors are going to be a far bigger piece of the picture than
ever before. Anyone involved in the music business, from record
companies to distributors to retailers, needs to stay up on the
latest trends in online music distribution. This article, which
will focus on the current state of music distribution over the Web,
with an emphasis on what a small record company, music retailer or
artist can do to market music online.
By now some of you are familiar with the basics of using databases in
your cgi scripts. Many of your databases will be small, with one or two
tables. But as you become braver, tackling bigger projects, you may start
finding that the design of your tables is proving problematic. The SQL you
write starts to become unwieldy, and data anomalies start to creep in. It
is time to learn about database normalization, or the optimization of
tables.
Part Two of the Introduction to Win32 Perl/COM focuses on
introducing you to the concepts of COM and shows the creation of
some simple COM components using Perl.

Last month we began building complex data structures in Perl using
lists, hashes, and combinations thereof. In doing so, we've flirted with
the subject of references. This month our flirtation blooms into
intimacy, as we cuddle up to Perl's references to help us build and
manipulate complex data structures.
Now that we're getting familiar with creating in Flash, it's time to add

Last week we covered the basics of Flash including the beginning
creation of our first Flash movie. This week we'll continue
developing our movie and explore composing images, touching on
gradients and file-size.
By now, even the smallest child knows that having your site listed in
the major search engines is the key to Earthly happiness. Human
nature being what it is, there are those (quite a lot, actually) who
would "beat the system," and try to trick the search engines into
giving them more coverage than is rightfully theirs. The searchies
wage an ongoing battle against these scofflaws, and if you aren't
careful, you can be caught in the middle. Even if all you're trying to
do is honestly promote your site, you may inadvertently violate one
or more search engines' guidelines, and be unjustly barred from
their listings. Here's an overview of what's acceptable and what's
not, with tips on how to stay on the right side of the line.
Building web sites often requires working with vectors and bitmaps,
and that can mean constant switching between graphics programs to
get the job done.
One of the most viable solutions to this problem is a program called
CompactDraw 1.02.

of the future, while still being able to maintain compatibility with
today's HTML 4 browsers.
The Internet gets closer and closer to being a real
multimedia experience. As the Web converges with TV and
radio, sequential delivery, which means "watching" a
"program" instead of "browsing"
a "site," will become
commonplace. Full-length features are the order of the day,
and we don't even need a browser to display them, thank
you very much.
Macromedia's Dreamweaver series has earned its place as the

Skeptics will say that you don't get something for nothing, but most
internet site creators figure it never hurts to try. Evrsoft's 1st Page

As we begin a new millennium, a new era in Web development is also
beginning. Making predictions is dangerous in this business, but it
seems clear that important changes in the way we use and design Web
sites are underway. Web developers who want to stay in business had
