Scripts - Java, Perl, CGI, etc.

March 6, 2000

If HTML is the 'glue' that holds websites together, scripts are the workhorse that powers it. Very few sites nowadays consist only of static pages; most offer some form of interactivity, from simple forms for user communication, to games and quizzes. In general, some level of programming expertise is useful (occasionally highly necessary) for installing scripts - but you can still do much if you're not a programmer. In particular, using Java applets is a no-brainer, since they almost always come with an example or two, and some installation instructions.

Java

We've already covered some of the best sites for free Java applets in a previous article in the series, on Games and Puzzles; here are some more sites for more general applets. As mentioned before, you need to understand how to use the applet tag, or the object tag if you want to be fully up-to-date.

The Java Boutique is a collection of java applets, games, scripts, and tutorials. Learn programming and download free java applets and source code. You can also find news about java and jini.

CodeBrain.com

"CodeBrain.com is a leading resource for software, freeware, free JAVA Applets, tools, scripts, and how-to articles for web developers, and downloads of interest to both general computer users and web developers."

The Java Gallery

My own collection of the "best of the best" free Java applets.

Free Stuff Connection: Java Applets

"Free Stuff Connection features thousands of great freebies for everyone. Check us out and get everything you ever wanted - FREE!"

Eric Harshbarger's Applets

This section of The Applet Depot houses applets that Eric Harshbarger has written and is making available for free download (compiled code only), so that others may include Java on their own webpages. Basic description and parameter documentation are included with each applet as well as a link to a TAR file that bundles all the necessary classes together. The applets below may be used by anyone on any webpages (commercial or otherwise). While no payment is due to Eric Harshbarger for the use of the applets, a mention of recognition and a link back to The Applet Depot would be greatly appreciated.

FreewareJava.com Applets

"...a comprehensive resource guide to everything Java on the net!"

JavaPowered

The Java site for caffeinating your web page with hundreds of free applet downloads and previews. Hundreds of java powered applets to add to your web site.

The Java Applet Rating Service (JARS)

"JARS.COM is the #1 Online Java Review Service for developers. It includes many categories of applets and applications some including references with source code."

Modern Minds Java Freeware

This page presents Java programs that Modern Minds is providing free of charge to the Internet community. These programs are free for non-commercial use only. This means that you cannot sell any of the programs or include them with any product that is sold without first obtaining permission from Modern Minds, Inc. You may, however, use the Freeware applets on a web page on a commercial site.
