Banner Beginnings

March 30, 2000

Creating an eye-catching banner can be one of the most frustrating aspects of web development. We can study HTML, we can copy/paste JavaScript but what do we do about that danged banner?

I think we've all been there. We start out with an idea, build on it, tweak, add, tweak some more and before we know it we've got a monstrosity instead of a masterpiece. Back to the drawing board. We could use some clip-art but that's sure to label us as a novice. No good, but how to get that award winning banner we all crave?

It's not as difficult as you might think. Simplicity is the key. A logo that can be added to one corner helps to brand your site and makes a cool favicon for IE users. However, logo creation is not what this article is about.

Ok, back on track here. Simplicity. Don't clutter your banner up with a gazillion different items. We need a title, so that folks will know what your site is called, and a design of some sort to add interest. Use color and contrast to your advantage. A blah banner will never catch anyone's eye.

Note: These banners were created with Paint Shop Pro 6, although they will work just as well in any raster graphic program.
