Browser Makers Specs and Policies

You're probably going to want to know how well the browsers support HTML 4.0. I searched the web for any document that could summarise that for me - and ended up on our sister site with HTML 4.0 in Netscape and Explorer by Stephanos Piperoglou. It annotates the HTML 4.0 specification, detailing the differences between the specification and its implementation in Netscape Navigator 4.0 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0. This is a comprehensive work, well worth spending some time with. Be sure to read the page On the issue of standards and implementations.

Be aware of the browser makers own HTML specifications and policy statements. Here are some useful links:-

HTML Tag Reference
Lists all the HTML tags and attributes supported in Netscape Navigator 4.0 and earlier.

Unimplemented HTML 4.0 Features in Mozilla
A summary of the BODY level tags and features that Mozilla does not currently support. This list is by no means complete.

HTML Elements at Microsoft
Lists the set of elements defined by HTML. The links take you to the element definitions, which contain the set of members for the element.

Specs and Standards -- Introduction
"Microsoft is committed to working with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to implement W3C-approved HTML standards, and has confirmed its pledge to work through W3C and other standards bodies on enhancements to HTML and other key Web technologies."

NETSCAPE OPEN STANDARDS GUARANTEE
"We will adopt the major open standards recommended by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and other appropriate, vendor-neutral standards bodies, such as the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), Object Management Group (OMG), ECMA, and others."
