UDDI: The Green, White and Yellow
December 11, 2000
Another hot topic at XML 2000 was the
UDDI (Universal Discovery Description and Integration) initiative,
which, according to the UDDI
Executive White Paper (Sept. 2000), "creates a global,
platform-independent, open framework to enable businesses to (1)
discover each other, (2) define how they interact over the Internet,
and (3) share information in a global registry that will more rapidly
accelerate the global adoption of B2B eCommerce." Based on XML, DNS,
HTTP, and SOAP. At least 130 companies have pledged support to UDDI. The
36 original project members and the 94 companies who have joined the
initiative as of mid November 2000 are listed in a press release. (My own
employer, Commerce One,
Inc., is one of the 36 original members.)
The goal of UDDI is to enable businesses to register information
about the services they provide so that other businesses can locate
them easily by consulting a repository. A UDDI business registration
consists of three components:
- white pages - address, contact, and known
identifiers;
- yellow pages - industrial categorizations based on
standard taxonomies; and
- green pages - technical information about services that
are exposed by the business.
- This includes references to specifications for Web services, as
well as support for pointers to various file and URL based discovery
mechanisms if required.
