XLink/XPointer Tool: X2X
December 20, 1999
As WDVL reported previously in our Weekly XML News (Dec. 5, 1999),
an interesting XLink/XPointer product called X2X has emerged.
The sophisticated XLinks/XPointers
called for in current W3C specs have a number of link aspects that exceed
their much more basic HTML counterparts:
- Resources
- Anchors
- Relations
- Meaning of relationship
- Anchor roles
- Processing of resources
- Presentation of resources
Link management is the idea the links are assets -- valuable resources
to be managed separately from the resources themselves.
STEP UK Ltd. has made available a beta release of
X2X the XML XLink engine [sic]
for the creation, management and manipulation of links.
According to their Web site:
X2X allows linking between documents and information
resources without needing to change either of the source or
target documents that are being linked. X2X removes the
requirement to insert link information inside document
content. The Links are NOT in the document....
X2X stores all the link information within a ODBC/ JDBC
enabled database, e.g. Oracle or SQL Server.
X2X is characterized by:
- storage and management of link information
- link information is stored in different repositories
- resolve resources against a LinkBase, the environment in which you store and manage links,
implemented as a layer on top of a relational database
- X2X LinkBase Explorer Tool
