XML and EDI
David Webber, the chair of the
XML/EDI group,
spoke about the family of XML specification as they apply to
e-Business, rather than authoring. In fact, he believes
e-Business transactions are the 'Killer App' for XML.
One stumbling block is the issue of security and trust,
which must go beyond SSL. (Note the efforts of the
XML-Signature Working Group to
produce digitally signed XML.) Webber emphasized that we must
handle international and global needs to truly solve
interoperability and scalability issues. For example,
standards such as those from
RosettaNet
have been rejected by the
European community. He believes that B2B
(business-to-business) supply chains will
increase dramatically over the next few years, as XML/EDI
becomes the killer app.
Webber highlighted a sampling of current XML-based EDI
initiatives, such as OTP, OFX, XFDL, CBL, WIDL, XML, ICE,
BizTalk, cXML, CBL, many of which appear on WDVL's
XML Specifications page.
WDVL plans to feature an article on XML e-Business efforts in
the near future.
