Wrapping it Up: Did We Do it With XML?

July 19, 1999

Wrapping it Up: Did We Do it With XML?

In this two part article, we covered a fair amount of ground by trying XML as an applet, in Internet Explorer 5, and in Amaya. We made up our own XML language, a Collection, and generated a DTD from our one XML instance. We examined two important issues (when to use elements vs. attributes, and what exactly is validation, at least from the IE5 perspective). This month, we experimented with four or five different XML editors that are $150 or less, we saw how to use CSS with XML to render styled XML, we were pleased that the IE5 and Mozilla versions were so much the same, and we tried an XML document with an XSL stylesheet in IE5, and we learned how much more powerful XSL is than CSS.

The purpose of this two-part article is to cut through a lot of the hype about XML and to actually try using XML. We hope you have enjoyed this type of experimentation (a practical hands-on tutorial). So, did we do it? Let us know what you think.

Watch WDVL's home page and our XML section for future articles on XSL syntax.
