A Closer Look at the Feedback Effect

February 12, 2001

Selections don't necessarily have to follow the outline of a subject; some interesting effects can be produced by selecting a whole section of an image with the oval or rectangular selection tool, and then inverting that selection to apply the effect to the areas not originally selected.

For this example I used the Selection tool with the following settings:

  • Selection type: Ellipse
  • Feather: 30
  • Antialias: checked

I then inverted that selection and applied the feedback effect. [Effects > Reflection > Feedback] with the following settings:

  • Opacity: 36
  • Intensity: 100
  • Horizontal Center: 100
  • Vertical Center: 0
  • Elliptical: unchecked

As with other effects in PSP7, the Feedback effect may be applied to greyscale and 24-bit color images. As promised, lets take a closer look at the options in the dialog box.

The Opacity determines the strength of the effect. The higher the number the less of the original image is displayed and more of the effect.

Specify the number of times the image will be repeated with the Intensity slider. Either drag the slider or type the number in the box.

The Horizontal slider controls the feedback's horizontal center and is calculated as a percentage of the image's width. To position the feedback center at the center of the image type 50 in the box. Increasing the value moves the feedback center to the right, decreasing it moves the center left.

The Vertical slider controls the feedback's vertical center and is calculated as a percentage of the image's height. To position the feedback center at the center of the image type 50 in the box. Increasing the value moves the feedback center to the bottom, decreasing it moves the center up.

Finally, there is a checkbox marked "Elliptical". When checked the feedback will be oval in shape, when unchecked it is rectangular.
