The Internet and Television

These two are definitely giving each other the eye. Are they going to jump into bed together ? What will their children be like ?

Television - the third parent. The Internet - widow maker. While our kids watch TV, we parents are surfing the net. Kids and parents have been divorced by the allure of modern electronics. Our only hope of reintegrating the family, of sitting in the same room again: merge the Internet and Television.

Many people are speculating on ways to converge TV and the Internet. But why ? Basically: TV is an all-pervasive consumer technology badly in need of a shot in the arm - or, like the Scarecrow from The Land of Oz, badly in need of a brain. And the Internet's content has matured commercially to the point where the main bottlenecks are the cost of the computer required to access it, and the technical sophistication needed to effectively use it. It seems that some cross-fertilisation of the two technologies could produce interesting children..

There are two basic options: Give the PC TV capabilities, or vice-versa. So for example, Intel and the Intercast Industry Group, are developing the Intercast medium to make it possible for your home PC to receive HTML-formatted Web pages and streaming information along with your regular television programming. You not only get to watch your favorite show, but you get in depth articles and links to related sites.

WebTV is a black box that sits on top of (or next to) your TV. It connects to the telephone line and hence the Internet. It comes with a remote control and optionally a remote keyboard. The box is in effect a stripped-down computer with a built-in web browser. You do not need to be computer-savvy to install it or use it.

The movement of the web on to TV brings with it new HTML and Java requirements. WebTV Networks Inc. and PowerTV Inc., are developing their own HTML extensions and are working with JavaSoft to create a TV-specific Java subset. TV related problems for web developers include only 2Mbytes of memory to work with, and problems with horizontal scrolling and presenting too much text on a page.
