Review: AceHTML 4 Pro

While many HTML programs try to paint themselves as a do-all entry into
the web building world, few really succeed. However, AceHTML 4 Pro is one
of those programs that can help turn a blank page into a masterpiece.
|
What helps AceHTML get the job done is a palette of tools that goes well
beyond mere coding into the world of Java, Javascript, DHTML, and other
elements that make designing for the internet a challenge.
It isn't necessary to learn all of those languages to use AceHTML
effectively, but it does help to have an understanding of how to
implement them and use them toward a particular goal rather than
simply parking them on a page for the sake of having them there.
The program, once known as AceExpert, has matured into a quality program
for the professional web designer. Despite that, it's $69.95 price tag is
more than reasonable for what you get.
For those whose abilities may not be up to the level of AceHTML 4 Pro,
there is a free version available that simply offers fewer features. Most
of the missing features in the free version are elements few novices would
want to deal with anyway.
The most important of the missing elements for novices in the free version
are the code inspector, 30 templates and 156 interface elements and
graphics themes, and the free technical support via e-mail.
All versions include an integrated style-sheet editor, 60 read-to-use
javascripts, 40 DHTML scripts, and a good image browser that lets you
view an entire directory rather than one graphic at a time. The program
also integrates with GOgraph to allow you to search more than 20,000
graphics for use on your pages.
What makes these features even better is the fact that in our testing,
they really, really worked, which isn't always the case with pre-defined
scripts that come with HTML programs.
Visicom Media, the company that makes AceHTML, also makes AceFTP, one of
the better programs for sending your creations into cyberspace. The company
has done a good job of integrating AceFTP into this program.
The heart and soul of AceHTML is the top bar where most all commands are
easily accessible. You can also use the drop-down menus in that area to
reach the features you desire.
There is also an internal viewer that can be turned on and off as needed,
a document weight evaluation feature to see how fast your finished page
will load on the internet, and an assortment of wizards to help build
tables, frames, and forms.
AceHTML is a feature-rich program that will fit in well with the arsenal
that any web builder takes to work each day. While the company's web site
did not mention it, I'm assuming that for those who really want to create
a masterpiece, talent is sold separately.
