XML Software Guide: XML and XSL Editors
July 5th 1998
Last Modified:
April 24, 2008
Several authoring tools are currently available for XML. In addition
to those listed below, it is clear that many previously existing
HTML and
SGML editors
will become capable of dealing with XML in the near future. For
example,
Macromedia Dreamweaver
also supports XML in version 2.0 and above.
-
-
XML Authority
and XML Instance
- XML Authority -
from Extensibility;
used to convert existing application and document structures to schemas, with support for
DTD, XDR, BizTalk, SOX 1.0 and 2.0, XML-Schema, and others.
Extensibility also offers
XML Instance
for schema-driven data editing that
allows for the creation, editing and management of data-oriented XML
documents, messages, and configuration files.

Windows and other Java platforms]
- XML Spy
- XML Spy is an inexpensive editor for XML, XSL, and DTD documents on the Windows
95/98/NT/2000 platform. XML Spy 3.0 is perhaps the first
Integrated Development Environment for XML that includes XML editing and
validation, Schema editing and validation, and XSL editing and transformation
in one product.
It has a tree and enhanced grid view, offers drag and drop, unlimited undo,
and detailed find/replace functions. It is a validating editor and is suitable for low-level
viewing and editing of all well-formed XML files.

- XMetaL
- SoftQuad, the maker of the popular HTML editor called HoTMetaL PRO
(get it?),
released XMetaL (get it?) around March 1999.
XMetaL provides authors with a familiar word processing-like
environment and a rich array of powerful authoring aids, including
multiple document views and context-sensitive property inspectors.
"XMetaL's extensive customization features enable the authoring environment to
be optimized for any DTD, without programming. Its COM-based architecture and
support for any Windows scripting language ensures that XMetaL can be
extended and integrated into any existing publishing infrastructure. Its
comprehensive support of SGML and web technologies makes XMetaL the ideal
tool for any hybrid SGML/XML environment and firmly establishes XMetaL as the
next- generation solution for all structured content applications."

- ADEPT Editor
- "ADEPT Editor provides the most robust SGML and XML capabilities
for creating, maintaining, and accessing your information. Working
on a Windows -based PC, OS/2- or UNIX-based workstation, ADEPT*Editor
allows you to create an information base from which you can output
printed documents, on-line interactive documents, CD-ROMs, and pages
for use on the Internet."

Windows and other Java platforms, including Solaris]
- XML Styler
- "ArborText's XML Styler is a tool for creating and
modifying XSL stylesheets. Its graphical user interface makes
developing and altering XSL stylesheets quick and easy, eliminating
the need to work with the many syntactic and structural details of
XSL directly."
[commercial product

- XML Notepad
- According to Microsoft,
"XML Notepad is a simple prototyping application
for HTML authors and developers that enables the rapid
building and editing of small sets of XML-based data. With
XML Notepad, developers can quickly create XML
prototypes in an iterative fashion, using familiar
metaphors.
XML Notepad offers an intuitive and simple user interface
that graphically represents the tree structure of XML data.
Working with the standard building blocks of XML
supported in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, authors are
able to create reproducible data structures that can be
easily filled, allowing greater emphasis to be placed on
application development instead of manual data
structuring."
[freeware product from Microsoft; Windows only;
requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 or later]
- Xpose
- According to Intravenous Communications,
"Xpose is a platform-independent XML editor with features
as interesting to XML novices as to experts. Xpose provides users
with a graphically intuitive way to build well-formed XML documents
- correctly, efficiently and quickly."
Some interesting aspects:
graphical DTD display,
restricts adding and editing of features according to the DTD, and
can be extended to include custom element editors (in Java).
Xpose can also be included as a component in other applications by
downloading Intravenous's
developer's toolkit, which includes an API and JavaBean.

- XML<PRO>
