The Web Developer's Mailing List

This mailing list is for the discussion of the technical and practical aspects of web development. Novices and experts alike are welcome. This list offers help for all user levels, whether you just logged on to the Net today or have been on since the start!

View the FAQ    wdvltalk Roundup     Subscribe/Unsubscribe/Configure/Search

This is a low noise, high quality mailing list. We ask you to accept the following guidelines before subscribing; instructions are at the end of this page. This list is independent of the WDVL Weekly newsletter. It's a forum where beginning and advanced WWW publishers and designers can interact and learn from each other.

User Guidelines and Netiquette

  • Before posting any questions here, please check the Discussion List FAQ and our Help pages. In addition, check the wdvltalk Roundup for a listing of monthly highlights from the discussion list. You might also find The internet.com Web Developer Network Discussion Forum very useful.

  • Title new postings well, like you would a Web page. Some people won't bother to read postings (in lists or newsgroups) that don't announce their topic up front. Titles like "Please help me!" etc don't help.. Change the subject line when your response moves the thread away from the original topic.

  • If you have a problem you want help with, please try to give a URL to an example of the problem. In the same way that you shouldn't expect a doctor to help you over the phone (unless she already knows your condition) - we may need to see the patient!

  • Validate any page that you want help with, before asking for help. This itself will sometimes help you solve your problem. The W3C provides a validation service.

  • If you want to respond to a posting, please reply to the list if at all appropriate. Others on the list might benefit from it. If you're not sure of your answer post it anyway, perhaps you're on the right track, and somebody else can supply another piece of the puzzle. And please offer URLs to further info if you can.

  • If you get useful responses that weren't posted to the list, please summarise for the list.

  • If you don't get postings from this list every day you probably have an email problem. You MUST subscribe with EXACTLY the same address you will post from.

  • Please only post complete answers and try to avoid things like "I'm not sure but.." or "I don't have the URL, but you can use a search engine..". Several people may be interested in the answer so it would be courteous of you to do the legwork..

  • When responding to an email, please remove all text that does not serve to remind readers what the topic is; two or three lines of context should normally suffice.

  • Please do not send responses that do not contribute useful information, such as one-liner witticisms. Some of us have a sense of humor but also do not want to waste time on content-free posts.

  • Please do not send blatant advertisements to the list. If you have a useful resource for web developers please announce it in no more than 5 hype-free lines with a URL to further information.

  • Do not send private Emails through a public list. Posting to a specific member is discouraged, unless the post can benefit the group at large. Please contact WDVLTalk users directly (through their own email) if you would like to continue a conversation with them about topics unrelated to the rest of the group.

  • Keep your post on-topic. Please do not forward Virus Hoaxes through the list.

  • Respect other people's opinions. They are right for each person, but may not be right for you. These are perspectives. Each person does have a right to his/her own perspective. Honor that, but you don't have to agree with each other.

  • Flaming, spamming and topics found to be unrelated to web development and/or implementation in general will not be permitted nor tolerated. Do NOT SPAM the list with your advertising message. You will be banned from the list.

  • In order to serve those using filters for their email messages, we encourage the use of the following "subject codes" to be used in the subject of your messages to the list where applicable:
    • Code subject of "web design related": [WEB]
    • Code subject of "off-topic posts": [OFF]
    • Code subject of "site check requests": [SCR]
    • Code subject of "software recommendations": [SFT]
    • Code subject of "CSS posts": [CSS]
    • Code subject of "Perl posts": [PRL]
    • Code subject of "ASP posts": [ASP]
