Some of the Steps and Side-branches Along the Way

Some of the Steps and Side-branches Along the Way

We were interested in a mouseover effect for the image map, a challenge to say the least since the map contained so many links. Each link would require two images each, sending the load time for the page out of the reasonable range. A compromise was reached which used only two images combined with text links.

The banner on this page was designed for a "how'd they do that" effect. The banner itself, offset to the left, appears to lie underneath the banner ad via the use of tables. Images were not optimized, so the page loads slowly.

We started out thinking the head and margin background color would be silver. I thought this looked a little too dull and depressing, and that we needed to keep the gold and light yellow from the old design. Note too the 'racing stripe' background which I really liked, but didn't fit so well with the gold/yellow colors, and some said 'boxed in' the content a little too much.

Seven variations of the surviving banner.

color_test
A brief color test devised for no other reason that to allow us to choose the best browser safe color for the right hand navigation border.

Here we see one of the ealiest incarnations of what ultimately became our new design. About the only thing on this page that survives is the right-hand navigation. Note the nearly monochromatic color scheme. Also, we originally had brought our font size down to a smaller size than we currently use. This too fell from the wagon, another casualty of the redesing process.

home_page
A snapshot of the 'old' home page design.
